Ongoing Magento Support for Magento 1 after Release of Magento 2

Magento is the most popular ecommerce platforms powering over 18 million online stores globally. Since its initial release in August 2007, continuous Magento support and updates for the system have been released to ensure that users are getting the most out of their Magento stores.

In 2015, Magento 2.0 was released to the public- the latest and most advanced version of Magento. Although some Magento users viewed this as a positive thing, many were concerned about what would happen to the stores being powered by Magento 1 and it was quickly rumoured that support would end in 2018.

Amid these concerns, a spokesperson for Magento has released an official statement regarding continued support for Magento 1.

Magento support will be ongoing for Magento 1

Magento have since revealed that the support for Magento 1 will be continued for the foreseeable future because they believe that everybody should have access to their software. Furthermore, Magento has vowed to give Magento 1 users 18 months’ notice prior to the support ending which will give them the time they need to migrate to Magento 2 or switch to an alternative platform.

Although this means that Magento 1 users will continue to receive the support they need, Magento is still pushing the release of Magento 2 and are hopeful that most people will transition.

What are the benefits of migrating to Magento 2?

Many users are sceptical of Magento 2 and even though Magento 1 was missing tools such as performance optimisation and had been criticised previously for running slowly, many users are satisfied that Magento 1 provides them with the tools they need to run their ecommerce website.

However, Magento have taken all of these points into consideration and have developed version 2 in a way that could benefit everyone.

In comparison to Magento 1, Magento 2 runs an average of 20% faster which not only provides a more user friendly experience, it will also help many site owners with their search engine optimisation. Furthermore, any Magento 2 updates are designed to work much faster than Magento 1 updates which means that site owners can begin using new features immediately after their release.

Payment gateways such as PayPal and Braintree have been better integrated into the system and the checkout process has been simplified. This means that users will be able to check out much faster on websites using Magento 2 in comparison to those using Magento 1.
