A Developers Guide To Improving Productivity At Work

Improving Productivity

Improving productivity in the workplace is something that everybody can benefit from, regardless of their job role.

It’s common knowledge that developers sometimes struggle with time management. That’s why here at Codeias, we have streamlined a process that makes us as efficient as possible, giving us the time to produce high quality work, quickly and efficiently.

Improving productivity from a developers perspective

There are several ways that you can improve your productivity in the workplace and our developers have put together a guide that gives you an idea on how to do it.

  1. Plan a schedule

In order to stay organised, plan a schedule at the start of each week that includes all of the projects that need to be completed. Prioritise the tasks in order of importance and cross them off your list one by one.

This means that even if you get interrupted, perhaps a customer calls or a server goes down, you know exactly where you’re up to.

  1. Set yourself realistic deadlines

Development can be, at times, unpredictable. Issues can arise that take hours to fix and eat into time that needs to be spent on other tasks. If tight deadlines have been set, these issues could prevent you from meeting your targets.

That’s why when planning tasks, it’s best to overestimate how much time you expect will be needed for each project. This gives you the opportunity to take the time you need to fix any problems that arise, without causing you to panic about the possibility you might not have time to finish other tasks.

  1. Have regular breaks

Staring at a computer screen for long periods of time can cause eye strain and fatigue- both of which are things that will impact on your productivity.

One of the ways to avoid this is by taking regular breaks from your screen and allowing your eyes the chance to focus on other things.

Breaks can also prove helpful when you’re struggling with mental fatigue as they allow you to refresh your mind and generate new ideas.

  1. Avoid multitasking

Multitasking is something that every developer does; but if improving productivity in the workplace is something you’re interested in doing, stopping multitasking is a definite.

Switching from one task to another can not only get confusing, it can cause you to lose track of where you’re up to meaning that tasks will take longer to complete.

  1. Keep your files organised

Keeping your files organised mitigates errors and prevents time being wasted searching through hundreds of unorganised files. This saves time overall and makes it easier to understand what each file’s purpose is.
